April is Farmer’s Market Season!

It’s farmer’s market season again! I’m so excited. March is the hardest month as all my stored squash and root vegetables are used up and the new vegetables aren’t quite ready. April brings spring vegetables to the market! It’s time to buy plant starts too. For several years I compiled a list of farmers markets for this blog. This year Monica Downen of Monica’s Waterfront Bakery and Cafe has a list: Monica’s list of Kitsap County Farmers Markets. Farmers Market Season has begun!

It’s farmer’s market season again! Here are some of the things you could find at the Poulsbo Farmers Market last Saturday. Starts: dill, lettuce, kale, kohlrabi, squash, marigold, sunflowers, tomatoes. Fresh produce:kale, mixed lettuce greens, big juicy radishes. Overwintered potatoes and brand new leeks; overwintered apples and spring rhubarb. Protein:Eggs, chicken, lamb. Staples:Wheat flour, corn meal, dried beans. Vancouver BC Food Tour

Alex and I spent last weekend in Vancouver. Saturday was food tour day! Following a visit to the Vancouver Winter Farmers market we headed to Granville Island. Edible Canada is both a store selling artisan food products and a bistro serving local food. I had the Edible Canada breakfast: scrambled eggs, pork and apple sausage and smoked bacon. There were two little smoked tomatoes, bright bursts of flavor, and my favorite thing, potatoes fried in duck fat. I’m going to get a duck and try that myself! Granville Island Public Market is a year-round indoor market stuffed with vendors selling vegetables and fruit, cheese, sausage, tea, honey, grains, maple syrup…it’s overwhelming! Since we couldn’t bring fresh food across the border we loaded up on finished foods, honey, maple syrup, and birch syrup.
