The Kitsap year has two seasons: pantry and farmers market! By May all the farmers markets are open around the county. The last market closes in December.
Farmer’s market season begins! The earliest markets open this month. What’s in season:
- Crops from last year cellared over by the farmers: potatoes, apples, garlic
- New greens: lettuce, kale
- Vegetable starts and local seeds
Nettles: sometimes you can find nettles at the farmer’s market. These sting, of course, so handle with gloves, or if you’re very careful you can dump them directly from their plastic bag into boiling water. Once boiled they no longer sting. After boiling for a bit, pull them out of the water. Use the nettle water as a tea, straight or mixed with another drink you like (lemonade, black tea). It’s a great spring tonic!
