The Kitsap year has two seasons: pantry and farmers market! By May all the farmers markets are open around the county. The last market closes in December.
March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, the end of winter and the beginning of spring. The root cellar vegetables and fruits are gone – if they’re not eaten, it’s time to give them to the chickens. Winter greens have bolted, but spring greens are available from the winter farm stands and farm stores, a welcome fresh addition to the table.
What’s in season
Fresh and frozen chickens, frozen pork, beef and lamb.
This is where the blueberries you froze last summer come into their own. They’re great in oatmeal, muffins, or out of hand as snacks. Canned applesauce makes a nice side dish at breakfast or lunch too.
