Brandy sauce

On a night when the Bremerton-Farmer’s-Market-to-table dinner included lettuce from Start Now, green beans from Pheasant Fields Farm, and corn picked the same day from Gregory Farm, I wanted to do something special with the Gregory Farm pears for dessert. I’ve never had pears with brandy sauce and thought I’d give it a whirl. Melt 1 stick unsalted butter in pan. Add 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup brandy, and a pinch of salt. Stir until sugar is melted, the sauce gets shiny and smooth. Peel, quarter and core pears, pour sauce over them and serve. This made a lot of sauce. Next time I’ll try halving the recipe: 1/2 stick butter, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/8 cup brandy. Links: Bremerton Farmer’s Market Start Now Pheasant Fields Farm Gregory Farm … Continue reading

Kitsap Sun story on local farmers

Did everyone see Chris Henry’s story about farmer’s markets in the Kitsap Sun last week? Photographer Meegan Reid turned out at the Bremerton Farmer’s Market and caught a pretty good picture of Glenn Huff selling carrots to Ted. My market basket also makes a cameo appearance in this story. More importantly the story highlights the challenges our local farmers have faced in this difficult weather year. The story quotes Nikki Johanson of Pheasant Fields Farms saying that her hoop houses have helped her put the produce out that’s been feeding my family this year. In a tough year like this one it’s even more important to turn out to the markets to support our farmers. Remember the Bremerton Farmer’s Market is today, only one more week in the season! Bremerton Farmer’s Market

Today I stopped at the regular Thursday Bremerton Farmer’s Market. I love this market, even though it’s not as big as Poulsbo’s, because the farmers are all my closest neighbors. Pheasant Fields Farms, my CSA, shows up every week. Jean Schanen and Glenn Huff bring their Start Now booth – they’re my regular lettuce supplier. Links: Bremerton Farmer’s Market … Continue reading
